Milan feels like a world away right now from my outpost in Sydney, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire the FW2021 spectacle from afar, beauty looks especially. There’s no doubt this time around has felt quieter than normal, but creativity is still rife; we’ve seen sartorial art at Moschino, elevated punk at Prada and bohemian chic at Etro.
So here, we’re celebrating the best in hair and makeup; shimmering metallics, ethereal skin, crimped hairstyles and all. We can’t experience fashion weeks in the flesh right now, but we can absolutely admire its beauty virtually.

BEAUTY AS ART
Moschino, as always, took normal beauty and flipped it on its head. Instead, we saw languid brush strokes, wild colours and vivd eyes with outstretched wings. While outlandish, let it serve as inspiration for the (hopefully) normal year ahead, characterised by connection and parties and glamour.
CRIMPING AND PREENING
It’s been while since our hair has seen the inside of a crimping iron but this might be set to change, thanks to the runway look at Giorgio Armani. Models wore tight, coiled up-do’s characterised by loose, crimped fringes. The youthful style was paired with clean skin and thick lashings of eyeliner. Overall it was wonderfully nostalgic, and excuse us while we dig out our hair crimping iron.
With Pat McGrath and Guido Palau at the beauty helm, Prada was always going to be a hair and makeup spectacle. And wasn’t it ever. Hair was slick and impossibly glassy, whereas makeup was bold and unusual; instead of one uniform colour scheme, McGrath instead used gold pigment on one eye, and silver on the other. In theory it sounds strange, but in practice it was perfect.
If there ever was a year for hair gel resurgence, maybe 2021 is it.
SMOKE AND BRAIDS
Etro made us feel a festival-shaped hole in our hearts with this tiny braids and smoky eye combination. It felt fresh but also straight out of the 70s: dewy skin, a smattering of freckles and soft, smudgy kohl laced around the eyes. The hair was perfect – loose and textured with two small face-framing braids. File this one under post-lockdown looks.
