Colchester Bike Kitchen gets cash boost from Sport England | Gazette – Gazette

A BICYCLE workshop which usually invites people to carry out DIY repairs has been handed a cash boost to help it survive closure through the coronavirus pandemic.

Colchester Bike Kitchen offers a safe space to people who need to fix their bicycle, providing access to work stands, tools and spare parts.

There is even a mechanic on hand to answer questions.

But the virus outbreak has left the business closed.

Sport England has unveiled a £20 million fund, made up of National Lottery cash, to help the sport and physical activity sector.

The workshop will receive £1,200 to put towards rent and insurance costs.

Michael Polom, Colchester Bike Kitchen steering committee member said: “We are immensely grateful to Sport England for extending this lifeline.

“As more people take up cycling due to the quiet roads during lockdown it’s more important than ever that they are able to look after their own bikes to keep them on the road.

“We look forward to reopening when it’s safe to do so and giving confidence to newcomers and experienced cyclists alike to keep riding.”
