Texas reported a record one-day increase in new coronavirus cases, continuing a trend among several US states in the west and deep South that have had a recent rise in the number of people testing positive for the disease.
A further 20,931 people in the US were confirmed to have tested positive over the past day, according to data compiled on Wednesday by Covid Tracking Project, up from 18,195 on Tuesday.
About one-quarter of those were in California and Texas, which reported 2,702 and 2,504 new cases, respectively.
Texas’s increase was its largest one-day rise in the number of people testing positive for Covid-19.
Arizona, Florida and North Carolina were the other states to each report more than 1,000 new cases over the past 24 hours. It was Arizona’s second-largest one-day increase since the pandemic began.
The 13 states that reported more than 500 new cases over the past 24 hours represented two-thirds of all new cases across the whole country but nine of these are in the west or deep South.
Since Tuesday, a further 889 people in the US died from coronavirus, taking the overall number of fatalities to 106,870.
