Today is Black Out Tuesday. In the wake of protests for racial equality, this is a national call to action and day of solidarity to encourage people to only buy from businesses owned by Black people today. It’s an effort to bring change to end racism.
Here is a list of some Houston-based Black-owned businesses focused on fashion, style, beauty and more. These are companies with products that you can buy today. This is list is nowhere complete, but it’s a start.
Onyii and Co. Founded by Onyii Brown, a wife, and mother of three, the African-feminine brand has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Martha’s Stewarts American Made, PBS start-up USA, Refinery 29, and many more.
A Leap of Style. Karissa Lindsay started the company from her living room with a $50 sewing machine and a childhood dream. Her line reflects the vibrancy of the African Diaspora.
Edwige Pierre Menswear Founded by Joshua Pierre, the brand is named for his great grandmother. Pierre earned a master’s degree from the Polimoda International Institute of Fashion Design.
Chasity Sereal Bridal, evening and an special occasion wear for women by self-taught designer, Chasity Sereal, who actually learned to sew by watching YouTube videos.
Kenneth Nicholson . Gender-neutral collection of tunics, skirts by Langham Creek High School grad Kenneth Nicholson who was one of five U.S. designers featured in the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s “Project” trade show in 2019. His garments are a fave of Houston Ballet’s Harper Watters.
Jimmy Burner. Since age 8, the Houston native Erwin Portis Jr., dreamed of being a fashion designer. The sneaker fanatiic launched, Jimmy Burner, sporty men and women’s collection at age 17 in 2016.
House of Chargois. The Mother-Daughter design team of Diannetta Chargois and Tramaine Chargois Singleton began designing clothing over 20 years ago in Beaumont. They specialize in bridal, formal and ready-to-wear
