Sport ignites the imagination and Emma Raducanu can inspire millions – The Times

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked by the sports editor of this parish to write a few words about the moment I fell in love with table tennis. This is now a regular feature in the Saturday section called “The Moment I Fell in Love with Sport”.

I recounted how, along with my brother, Andrew, I had attended a small club near my home in suburban Reading and watched two teenagers playing on one of the four tables. I talked about how their virtuosity blew us away, how it stoked our imagination, how table tennis suddenly seemed exciting, magical, full of hitherto undreamt possibilities. More than four decades on, the fuse is still burning — although retired from the game, I love watching
